Breeding Objectives

Here at Katandra we are constantly challenging our cattle to perform.

Heifers are joined at about 15 months of age to calve at 24 months. Heifers that do not calve as a 2 year old are given the chance to calve as a 3 year old, but after that there are no more chances. Adult cows must calve every year. We believe that cows should exhibit femininity while possessing volume with a moderate frame score.

Bulls are joined at 2% for 12 to 15 weeks depending on the season. They are morphology semen tested, Genestar tested, scrotal measured and must possess moderate to good bone. Muscle tone is very important, as is length. We look for tidy sheaths with an active sphincter muscle and plenty of sheath hair thus displaying high libido. Bulls must be masculine with smooth shoulders and hips.

Breedplan is being utilized in the herd to measure traits but visual appraisal is the most important tool used. We are strict on all the usual selection criteria, temperament, fertility, udders, hocks, pasterns, feet, wry face, jaws and buffalo fly marks. Strength behind the shoulder is considered a must, along with a good straight backline.

All our cattle must be good doers, easy to handle and quiet. We are beef producers, but most importantly food producers, so our goal is to utilize our knowledge and experience while incorporating modern technology to ensure a pleasurable eating experience. This is one reason Genestar has been introduced into our operation.

All cattle offered for sale from Katandra as breeding stock have gone through rigid assessment for quality, they are not culls. Our culls are sent to the meat works. We aim to produce cattle that can be finished off grass or grain, for domestic or export markets.
